Loops, Ruts, & Groundhog Days: How To Escape the Cycle
The Plotline©, by its very nature, is designed to stir up some serious introspection.
People often ask me, “What if I don’t feel like being ‘creative’ with my day?” (Spoiler: my short answer is, *you need to ask yourself ‘why?’* What does a ‘non-creative’ day represent to you? More on that in the next issue of the Director’s Cut).
The above question usually comes second. First, there’s that initial burst of inspiration, followed by... well, a phenomenon I call *"repeating the same script."* You write the same plotline for yourself day after day. Sometimes you nail the beats, and other times, it’s like a chaotic improv show gone wrong.
My answer? That’s great. It means there’s a wealth of self-knowledge waiting to be unearthed from these repeated scenarios.
What’s happening here is simple: you *want* to live a certain way, but lifestyle, emotional, or professional roadblocks keep rerouting you back to the same spot. You’re going in circles, feeling frustrated.
When I first started using The Plotline©, I’d script myself as a Natasha-from-SATC, Ralph Lauren catalog-esque style icon. Which is, let’s be honest, *very much* not me. Maybe a few elements here and there, but mostly I was just writing a character I thought I *should* be rather than embracing the one I actually *am*. Cue the frustration.
The key is to stay fluid with your Plotline-ing. Take the parts that resonate and incorporate new elements that make the journey feel more aligned.
Here’s a peek at one of my recent entries:
“She’s up. Hair a bit messier than she’d like, but she makes up for it with a matching set. That’s how life goes—sometimes you’re up, sometimes you’re down. 80% done is better than 100% not. And these are the things she’s 100% excited about getting done today…”
And for anyone wondering, “Why write in the third person?”
Because The Plotline© is the ultimate *do-you* list. It’s more than just ticking boxes. Sure, to-do lists are fast and efficient, but they lack soul. They’re great for productivity but not exactly life-changing. With The Plotline©, you create an emotional resonance with your day, making you more invested in the outcome.
When plot twists inevitably arise, you’re not just struck by the disappointment of a missed task—you’re prompted to dig deeper and uncover what’s truly getting in the way of your happiness and growth.
